The Premise
The Journeyman explores how humans have always found insight — across traditions, cultures, and centuries — and what that history has to say to modern people facing modern challenges. Freemasonry is where this channel started and remains its deepest well of firsthand knowledge, but it's one pillar among several: craft and guild traditions, classical esoteric and mystery traditions, contemplative practices, oral knowledge-keeping systems, and the real (often more mundane than popular culture suggests) history behind symbol and divination systems.
This isn't a channel about revealing secrets. It's about the history, the philosophy, and the parts of these traditions that are already public, already documented, and genuinely useful — whether or not any of them are traditions you'd ever practice yourself.
Format
Videos fall into two types:
- Beginning episodes open a new question or subject
- Arrival episodes land on a perspective or a lesson, often paired with a downloadable summary
The Pillars
- Craft & Guild Traditions — Freemasonry and the broader history of medieval guild "mysteries" (the word originally meant trade secret, not the occult)
- Esoteric & Mystery Traditions — Hermeticism, alchemy as psychological metaphor, the Eleusinian Mysteries, Pythagorean thought
- Contemplative Traditions — Sufi teaching stories, Zen koans, Christian contemplative practice
- Oral & Indigenous Knowledge Systems — how vast, precise knowledge was carried in memory and story long before writing, from Homeric epic to Aboriginal Australian songlines
- Divination & Symbol Systems — the real, documented history behind things like Tarot and the I Ching, separating genuine history from popular myth
About the Author
Andy is a Freemason and the creator of The Journeyman. He is currently working on delivering a traditional Masonic lecture entirely from memory, and writes and researches this material as an ongoing personal project. Nothing published on this site or the accompanying YouTube channel goes beyond what is already publicly documented about any tradition covered.
